Dean's Grand Rounds Special Event: "How to Succeed in Clinicals."



UMHS is pleased to announce a special session of the Dean’s Grand Rounds will be held today, Monday, September 15th at 5:00 PM in the UMHS Auditorium on the St. Kitts campus. Dr George Shade will speak on "How to Succeed in Clinicals". 
(Please note that Epidemiology class has been reassigned to the Eastern Lab for this Monday)

George H. Shade Jr., M.D., F.A.C.O.G., F.A.C.P.E., is an obstetrician-gynecologist from Indianapolis, Indiana where he is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Detroit Receiving Hospital / University Health Center and Harper University Hospital / Hutzel Women's Hospital. Dr Shade received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and has been in practice for 40 years.

Dean's Grand Rounds

Following on the success of last semester, The Deans' Grand Rounds for our Spring 2012 semester should also prove to be very interesting and informative. The schedule so far is as follows:
  • May 17: "Embracing the Future of Health Care" with Dr. Mountasser Kaadrie.
  • June 7: "The History of Medicine: Part 1" with Dr Michael Doherty, Professor of Neuroscience.
  • June 14: "The History of Medicine: Part 2" with Dr Michael Doherty.
  • June 26: "Technological Advances in Varicose Vein Treatment." with Dr. Kathryn Bohn, Dr Thomas Neilsen, and Illinois Vein Specialist Staff.
  • July 19: "The US ~ Canadian Health Care Debate" with students Dyman Shepherd (US corner) and Rafal Szymczuk (Canadian corner).  
  • August 2: "Recipe for Longevity" with Dr Girish Kotwal, Professor of Microbiology.

MEDLINE® Complete , the latest product offering from EBSCO and described as "an unprecedented full-text collection of the most sought-after medical journals", is now available to our faculty and students! "This exceptional database provides full text for the most prominent journals used in the field of medical research. MEDLINE Complete is the largest full-text companion to the MEDLINE index, containing full text for more than 2,060 journals." This upgrade to our EBSCO subscription provides access to an additional 500 medical journals. Check it out on your computer or mobile devise utilizing your EBSCO login. Please pop in to see me in the library for further instruction on how to search this, or any of our other great library resource databases.

Enjoy Your Summer Semester Break!

As another semester draws to a close, the Library Staff would like to say 'good-bye' and 'all the best' to those students who are moving onward and upward! It has been a sincere pleasure serving you all over this past semester, and we look forward to hearing of your continued success!

With the semester end, also comes the time to return all your checked out items to the library and settle your accounts. We very much appreciate your full and prompt cooperation.

Every semester, both students and faculty generously donate materials to the library. Please accept our gratitude and thanks! All donations are very much appreciated!

During the semester break the Library will be CLOSED from Saturday August 20th until Monday August 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
We will reopen Monday August 29 until Friday September 2 between the hours of 8am~6pm, and CLOSED Saturday & Sunday ~ Sept 3 & 4. Normal library hours will resume Monday September 5th.

Pathology Professor Generously Donates to the University's Library

The Anne Ross Library wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Robert Fogel , Chair of Pathology, for the generous donation of more than 60 medical reference books. You will notice as you come into the library, we have relocated the Reference Collection to the shelves next to the 'Course Notes' in order to accommodate this valuable donation. The anatomical models have moved into the old reference shelves.
From all of us at the Library, we wish to say,
"Enjoy your retirement Dr. Fogel!"
You will be sincerely missed by all on campus!

Lunch & Learn: Sickle Cell Disease

All students and faculty are invited to join us for this special "Lunch & Learn" event! Our guest speaker is a renowned Hematologist and expert on Sickle Cell Disease.
Dr. Adebayo Olujohungbe, whose current work is in cancer research, has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in the field of Hematology, a book on Sickle Cell Disease, as well as research articles on Multiple Myeloma.

Bring your lunch, learn and ask questions about the pathophysiology and manifestations of this disease.

The Library Addition is now OPEN!

The new study room addition to the Anne Ross Library is now open to students with 32 private study carrels!
Your cooperation is needed to maintain this space, along with the rest of the library, as a SUPER QUIET & FOOD FREE ZONE! We are also making a special request that you all take great care to not allow the furniture to get wet!


In addition, take note that any items left unattended are left at your own risk , and may be moved if the carrel is wanted by another student!

The power bars need to remain 'ON' at all times.
The hours for the Library Annex are the same as for the rest of the library:
Mon~Fri: 7:00am~10:00pm Sat/Sun: 9:00am~9:00pm

The Library Staff extends its thanks to President Warren Ross for approving this welcome addition to campus & to Dan Vitalo and the Facilities Crew for a job well done!

Now when you login to our EBSCOhost databases you will notice a new button to access a mobile friendly version of the search interface!
So now you should all be good to go!
You have mobile access to our Library Catalogue, DynaMed and now all the other EBSCO journal databases such as Medline & CINAHL with Full Text!
Check out the Toolkits as well for links to information on mobile 'Apps' for medicine and nursing.

Library World has added this new interface option to give you the flexibilty of browsing the physical and electronic resources of our library from wherever you happen to be.

3) No password is required so leave it blank!

Guest Lecturer on Campus

Dr. Cal Robinson, a medical psychologist, will present a Brown Bag Lecture on Thursday, FEBRUARY 11 at 12:40PM in the Eastern Classroom. The subject of his lecture is:

Dr. Robinson hails from Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he worked as a Medical/Health Psycologist at the The NeuroMedical Center.

Student's Videomicrography Work Recognized

The Scientist 2009 Video Awards, an annual international competition of the life sciences magazine The Scientist, has honored the videomicrography work of Arjumond Khan (currently studying medicine at UMHS-SK) and Benjamin Woodhouse.
The two students conducted their work in videomicrography as part of their senior research project at Western Connecticut State University. Their video captures the microscopic time-lapse progression of the life cycle of the slime mold species Dictyostelium discoideum.
The video was named one of three runners-up in the competition's Individual Category division.

The 1st Interdisciplinary Clinical Simulation Symposium

Join us in St. Kitts on February 13 ~ 15, 2009, for the 1st Interdisciplinary Clinical Simulation Symposium. Hosted by the University of Medicine & Health Sciences ~ St. Kitts and the International University of Nursing, this symposium will hold workshops designed for nurses, physicians and medical faculty.
