Understanding the reasons behind clinical outcomes is a key step in improving patient care.

The report examines trusts' performances in several areas, including mortality, readmissions, patient satisfaction and excess bed days. Results were gathered from HES data and Dr Foster's annual Hospital Guide questionnaire.
A number of top-performing trusts are highlighted as examples of best practice.
